New York Cosmos, formerly known as MetroStars, was founded in 1996. After a merger, the team played its home games on Randall's Island, but moved from Long Island to Brooklyn, where it became the Brooklyn Nets of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a division of Major League Soccer.
The city was also once home to the New York Cosmos, the first football team in the United States, and once home to the USA. The men's national team and the World Cup.
New York City also had a World Hockey Association team, the New York Raiders, who played in the city from 1925 - 1942 when they moved to San Diego, and then again from 1946 - 1953. In 1997, two new teams were added: the New Jersey Red Dogs, who play in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and the Dragons, who played at Madison Square Garden until 2008, when the league ceased operations. Since the Albany-based Empire joined the AFL in 2018, all teams in the city and state of New York have played their home games at the Nassau Coliseum in Albany, New York, and in Brooklyn, New York. New York City Hawks, who play at Madison Square Garden, and the NY Rangers, a professional baseball team in Manhattan's Hudson Valley.
New York will have a professional rugby team from 2020, which is part of the New York City Rugby Union (NYRU). The Celtics play their home games at Red Bull Arena, which they share with the NY Red Bulls, and also play at Madison Square Garden.
Since 1972, the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale has been home to the New York Cosmos, a professional rugby team in the National Rugby League (NHS), and has been home to a bed since 1972.
The Brooklyn New York Yankees, renamed the Brooklyn New York Yankees, moved from the AAFC to the NFL after one season. The team's final home stadium has yet to be determined, although both the team and city officials have stressed the importance of identifying a football stadium - a special stadium that would be a permanent home for both teams. NYC's best football team is drawing attention at MetLife Stadium, but the stadium search has been in the Bronx as a possible site for a stadium. Finally, New York City runners are encouraged to even run the New York City Marathon, the world's largest, in November.
NYC Parks and the New York Rangers offer free street hockey youth clinics offered by Coca-Cola, "Get the Ball Rolling," provided by NYC Parks, the city's Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Rangers. The Mets and Yankees are two of the most well-known professional baseball teams in the United States, and there are several other Major League and Minor League sports teams. Two more play within the city limits: the Mets - affiliated Brooklyn Cyclones (think of the New Jersey Devils (the Yankees "newest affiliate) and a few minor league teams, both of which play in Brooklyn, New York, the Bronx and Staten Island, respectively. In addition to the two Major League Baseball (MLB), New York City also has two smaller baseball leagues that play their home games at Yankee Stadium.
The New York City area is also the venue for what is likely to be the first edition of the NPSL Members' Cup: the New Jersey Aviators of the National Premier Soccer League. The team will play its home games at Forest Hills Stadium, which was chosen as the venue for the 2016 WTT Finals to welcome the expansion "New York Empire" to the league, and won its first league title in 2014. NYCFC is the second largest football team in the United States after Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and joins the NYC Red Bulls, who play across the river in Harrison, New Jersey. Both teams play at MetLife Stadium in Manhattan, although both teams have been based there for a few years, having played there before moving to Met Life Stadium.
I can't even remember a game we lost, I just remember leaving the stadium after playing Sinatra's New York, New Yorker, and that was it.
But New Yorkers tend to get behind the local team that wins, and to be honest, I was 100% behind the Stanley Cup winner in New York in 1994. My family is split along the Mets / Yankees line, but there are a lot of other teams in town, like the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Giants, Yankees and Yankees.
There's also the rivalry between the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets, and we played in Super Bowl XLII where Helmet Catch played. New York has many great sports teams, such as the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Giants, Yankees and Giants, because of its geographical location.
